    Investigate and communicate about ophthalmic equipment and accessory bench performance from a clinical and user needs perspective. Communicate findings to design, marketing, users and labeling review groups, publish scientific results, and identify opportunities for innovation and differentiation.

     

    An individual contributor, focused on technical contributions, influencing peers within the department and cross functionally indirectly through objective communications and data-driven analysis. No direct report management.

    Responsibilities

    • Lab testing on ophthalmic systems and accessories: Plan and execute bench testing, data analysis and scientific modeling to establish fitness for user needs and to support marketing claims about technical performance related to differentiated and / or innovative products, product features, and product characteristics.
    • Document the results of this testing for inclusion in the design history file, and present the results to commercial, regulatory, and other groups reviewing labeling and claims.
    • Summarize, publish, and present results of bench tests, analysis and modeling to users and customers internally and at ophthalmic industry shows and scientific forums.
    • Working with design engineers, identify potential innovations and drive clinical performance-specific design improvements.
    • Working with Principal Applications Engineer, validate that product designs meet user needs.
    • Working independently or with team members, lead the demonstration of product to customers in a wet lab environment in technical and industry showcases.
    • Working independently or with team members, lead and execute root cause investigations on product failures on an as needed basis
    • Key Relationships: Report to design director, Internal customers-Commercial, Quality and R&D

    Qualifications

    • Required Education: MS or PhD in an engineering, science or medicine area
    • Preferred Education: Ideal candidate has MD or PhD
    • Work History: 10 years of experience preferred
    • Required Skills: Background or understanding of medical / scientific methods and concepts, clear communication of complex concepts and results in simple manner, strong written and oral communication capabilities, strong investigative capabilities / toolset. Ideal candidate will be organized, self-directing but capable of operating within a team environment, with the ability to discern between situation calling for leadership and ownership of an area and situations calling for collaborating and contributing as an individual.
    • Preferred Skills: Familiarity with ophthalmic microsurgery and equipment used during such surgery. Some past experience in high speed videography, thermal videography, vibration measurement, visible spectrum measurements, material identification, and / or evaluation of published intellectual property will be useful.
    • Specialized Training: Familiarity or experience with medical devices in general, ophthalmic microsurgery, eye anatomy, and supporting marketing or clinical claims in submissions and promotions will be useful.
    • Required Qualifications: Prepared to share examples of modeling, analysis, and bench testing in past.
    • Preferred Qualifications: Previous scientific publications.
